MOOC | Advanced training course in Deforestation-Free Supply Chain Management & EUDR compliance

In cross collaboration with our partner Wageningen University & Research and based on our first edition of the Advanced training course in deforestation-free supply chain management, we created a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) to support students and professionals from all over the world in driving real change toward a more transparent, responsible, and sustainable global trade system.

This course equips you with the knowledge and practical tools to navigate the challenges of implementing the European Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) and achieving deforestation-free supply chains. Through real-world examples and interactive learning, you will learn how businesses can align sustainability commitments with compliance requirements.

What will you find in the course?

The course is structured in five online modules, guiding learners from foundational knowledge to applied practice:

Module 1: Introduction & Context

Global and regional deforestation trends, forest-risk commodities, and key socio-environmental and policy concepts.

Advance Course

Module 2:
EUDR

Development, design, and limitations of the EUDR; implications for smallholders and Indigenous Peoples; governance and policy frameworks.

Module 3:
CSR, voluntary sustainability standards, and certification schemes

Principles of Corporate Social Responsibility, ESG finance, and the role of certification systems in EUDR compliance.

Module 4:
Technical path to compliance

Risk assessment, due diligence, geospatial monitoring, traceability tools, and the use of data-driven platforms (e.g., Global Forest Watch).

Module 5:
Technical path to compliance

Monitoring Land-Use change and quantifying deforestation. Satellite data and AI-based alerts.

Module 5:
Managerial & soft skills

Project management, communication, environmental accounting, and strategies to address paradoxes in DFSC management.

Module 7:
Final project

You will conduct a deforestation-risk assessment for one supply chain of your choice.

Verified track

Students and professionals working with forest-risk commodities or integrating deforestation and ESG risk assessments into investment, interested in deepening the topic, accessing additional material, and obtaining an official certificate, can access the verified track

The verified track costs 225€ and you will:

Receive a digital certificate from the University of Wageningen after successful completion;

Gain access to graded materials;

Gain unlimited access to course content and videos;

Showcase your accomplishment on your LinkedIn profile.

The basic course content remains free, ensuring open access to high-quality educational material. The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and deforestation-free supply chains involve stakeholders from diverse countries and backgrounds. The first edition of the Advanced Training Course on Deforestation-Free Supply Chains took place online between March and June 2025, and was organised in collaboration with the University of Padova. It involved 36 students and professionals from across Europe. After the online course, students had the possibility to attend a 4-week specialization school in Padova, Italy.

Skills you will acquire

The proposed course aims to bridge the skills gap by equipping participants with theoretical and practical expertise. Trainees will be prepared to assume roles as managers and technicians of DFSC, with skills tailored to meet regulatory demands and market challenges.

  • Mastery of tools and databases for identifying and analysing deforestation and forest degradation processes across global, regional, national, and local scales.
  • In-depth understanding of major international policies addressing deforestation and forest degradation.
  • Familiarity with voluntary sustainability standards for agricultural and forest resource management and their effectiveness in mitigating deforestation risks.
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks in FRC-producing countries and their implications for supply chains.
  • Proficiency in tools for analyzing trade flows, monitoring supply chains, tracking goods, and assessing associated risks.
  • Managerial capabilities for planning, implementing, and maintaining due diligence systems, including activity and resource planning and cost analysis.
  • Technical expertise for data collection, analysis, and visualization to identify, quantify, and mitigate deforestation risks.

How to enroll in the course

The EMMA4EU Advanced E-Course, coordinated by the University of Padua, requires enrollment through the university’s portal. Here’s the info you’ll need to apply successfully!

Deadline:

Applications close on February 21 at 12:30 PM CEST.
After the evaluation and selection process, the ranking list will be published by February 21

Fees:

All applicants are required to pay a non-refundable pre-enrollment fee of €30.
A fee of €572,50 will be requested after selection, except for students from partner universities of the Erasmus+ EMMA4EU project, who can enrol free of charge.
